Your Questions About Looking For Jobs In Los Angeles

Betty asks…

jobs for convicted felons in los angeles?

I am looking for jobs that are open to felons in Los Angeles so that I can finish my paper for college..please help!

Robin West answers:

I’d start with the PAROLE Department, ‘cuz that is who is in charge of getting them their jobs. I know a lot of them end up on skid row in downtown L.A. At the shelters in Management positions! I am not joking. A really good organization that I would not be hesitant to send you to is in East L.A. In Boyle Heights by the name of HOMEGIRLS CAFE. There is also a HOMEBOYS, but I don’t know what they specialize in. This organization really has it together & all the staff has a background that could help you finish your paper, and you could show your support by buying their food. I think they would help you even if you didn’t buy food!

JM, hopefully this is more along the lines of what you’re asking:

1. Run spell-check to eliminate the typos like “professional manor” – should be “professional manner.” Consider using the Word software resume template. But before you go to any trouble, see point #2.

2. Worry less about the resume; instead, apply online to the retail organizations, but be careful about your spelling.

3. Follow up your online applications with a visit, wearing conservative business attire; see if you can set up a talk with the local manager when you visit, don’t expect to see her/him the first time, and then return to ask again if it is a place you really want to work. When/if the manager tells you to apply online, mention that you have already done so, and if possibly, produce a printed copy (don’t worry if you can’t – this is an extra to impress them). Be ready to talk about any experience you have with their product or service, and your immediate availability for work – you might get lucky and catch one of them lacking a sufficient staff so they’ll work quickly to get you aboard.

4. Remember this is a numbers game and don’t get your feelings hurt. The more often you visit the more likely you’ll get an offer.

Good luck!
