Your Questions About Local Job Listings

Sharon asks…

Why is it so impossible to get a job!?!?!?

I’ve managed to get interviews at least every other week with almost all the local shops/restaurants that I could easily mesh into. I’m bilingual (French). I have a perfectly formatted resume. I have former experience in the fast-food industry. I’m a perfectly capable 19 year old. I know for a fact that my former managers would all rehire me in a heartbeat if the opportunity were presented to them. Ughh…..I hate living in the High Desert (California)! The only job listings I can ever find for this area on the web are all for jobs that require degrees, bar tending school and stripping. All these stupid Ma ‘n’ Pa shops and restaurants only hiring family members and friends. I’m not at all exaggerating either. I can’t stand not having any income anymore. My clothes are all WAY over sized, ratty and stained. I can’t go to school like I want to due to lack of income/no one to lend any money. It also sucks that almost everyone I know/am related to is in the same situation that I’m in. Sorry, I just needed to vent. I realize that there are a lot more people that probably have it exactly as bad or way worse than me right now, but it’s still extremely frustrating to know that I was doing perfectly fine in life and now I’ve fallen to the bottom of the hole. If anyone actually has a legitimate answer for this, go ahead and shoot.

It’s just hard to find a job. Seeing how you can not relocate, I would say look into Job Corps, you have free housing, free living, up to 50$ every two weeks, with opprotunities to get jobs on center to make 150$ every two weeks, and 1200$ after u graduate. There is also college that is payed for by the government. You also learn a trade, such as CNA (certified Nursing Assistant) Culinary, Electrician..etc… It is a good opprotunity. If you would like to know my personal experience, let me know.

Other Gov. Ran programs:

AmeriCorps
PeaceCorps

Susan asks…

Are there too many radiologic technologists in the field currently?

I have noticed that the graduating class at the local community college is having trouble finding jobs at the area hospitals. Also, there are no job listings for X-ray techs, CT techs, or MRI techs in my area. Is this a common theme in other regions? Are other rad tech schools still pushing through as many techs as possible even with the apparent downturn in postions due to CR and DR? Has anybody else witnessed this and is it just a cyclical occurrence? Thanks for any responses.

Robin West answers:

I think there are. The waiting list at my local community college was 9 years for this program, if that gives you any idea of just how bad they shuck students through there like cattle. There was also an older woman at my work who had her certification in rad tech. She tried to get a job a one of the local hospitals and was told not to bother because they generally only hire younger kids, just out of school. I, like you never see any job postings for this field, but I could be looking in the wrong place(doubt it.)

Michael asks…

How do you find rental listings for remote areas?

Since Craigslist doesn’t cover towns as small as the areas I am searching and sometimes there doesn’t even seem to be a local paper..I am searching from out of town for a place to stay while on contract jobs..

Robin West answers:

Craigslist is still your best bet – look at the listings for the nearest city or section of the state. Otherwise run an ad in the local papers (yes, there is one for almost all areas) or pennysaver-type papers. If you are looking for short-term only, try something like VRBO.com; it’s Vacation Rentals By Owner, but they will likely be open to renting for a month or 2 at a time in the off-season. Contact local real estate and property management offices; also RV parks sometimes have units you can rent. Also call any motels or apartment buildings in the area – they may have furnished units you can rent short-term. If all else fails, and you are truly in remote areas, buy your own RV to travel around the country in.
