Please help me with job-seeking tips?
I have been searching for a job since November of last year. My last job I left because of a medical issue which is now resolved. I moved to where I am now two years ago, and I had jobs as a caterer, but I was laid off from those. My job history looks bad because of the several short employment spans and time I have been off looking. I really want to work and am a very hard worker, but my on-paper first impression is pitiful. I apply online at websites for any job they have and have not gotten one interview. I have gone to job fairs, where all they want you to do is apply online. I ask people I know of their jobs are hiring, and sometimes have gotten applications, but I never get past the initial interview. I am desperate for work, I am a college student and my aid only does so much. Any tips you can give me I would appreciate so much! Thanks

The only thing I can think of is that you are not coming across confident of your ability (and since you have had some lumps – it’s understandable).
You need to know why you were not hired – so you may try calling back the interviewers and ask them if they could either give you some tips or some feedback. Ensure them you are only seeking the information for self improvement.
Perhaps ask a friend to practice interviewing with you and give you some feedback.

Tips for job seeking/experience with no current experience?
I currently don’t have any professional or little to no working experience and I’m about to graduate from college (undergrad). I’ll be going into a masters program, though.
I’m currently volunteering for a city department doing various work that the stuff don’t have time to address, such as working on plans and reports. What else should I be looking to do if I can’t find work to get experience…which I need to get work?
Robin West answers:
You are doing a very smart thing by doing volunteer work. Hopefully you are volunteering to do work similar to your training. If not, look into volunteering in your area of expertise.
Start to network, if you haven’t already. Try and go to lunch with the people you work with. Join church groups, professional groups, college alumni organizations and hand out your business card….just your name and phone number.
Talk with your professors for leads on where you might go to look for a job, or network. They might know about internships in the area.
Good Luck! You are off to a good start!
