Carol asks…

Los Angeles Times ad for Gov’t Jobs $21-$78; legit or scam?

Listed in the la times classified job section. Business is listed as Government Career Service, located on 4942 Vineland Ave Ste 102 in North Hollywood, CA. Wanted to see if you could actually get a job through this service or do they just take your money. Thanks

Robin West answers:

If they ask for even a dime from you, they are a scam.

Sandy asks…

Los Angeles parking ticket government error?

I have a car which is registered under my sister’s name because at the time I just started my first job and didn’t have enough credit. My sister does not live in US for years and she uses my address for all her banking statement etc. Both of my sister and my personal mails send to a permanent address A. But the car and I’m currently live in address B (I have utility bill there too).

I have the car since day one (July 2007 – present). I got a parking violation and overdue fees $150 sent to my house address around Jan 20th. The violation was cited on Dec 21, 2009 (4:03 pm). I check my calendar and I’m sure I was working on that day so I went ahead for contesting the ticket.

I work in a big building in downtown area. Per the building’s rule, every single person has to have a card (sensor or something) to come in and out the building and swipe the card while in/out the parking facility. Basically, the parking facility has everyone’s records for what time you come in and out etc. Here is the proof I sent to the contesting center:

1. To prove that I’m the only person driving this car at all time, I’ve submitted:
a. car insurance of my name (and she has never had insurance under this car)
b. my utility bill shows the address which matches the car registration address
c. monthly check I made for the payment and I have copy of the deposited checks

2. To prove that I was working whole day on the day of violation
a. a print out of my parking record on Dec 21, 2009 (in around 10 am/ out around 6:30 pm)
b. the telephone # of the front desk lady who works at the parking facility in case they want to verify
c. the badge with photo of me and my name which I use to enter/exit the facility
d. phone # of my HR in case they want to verify
e. a Outlook email sent on Dec 21, 2009 at 4:23pm from my company’s account

I thought I have a solid case but they still denial the contest. The reason is they said the name of the car registration has nothing to do with me. Is there anyway I can win the case?? I AM 100% INNOCENT AND I’M SURE THEY DON’T HAVE ANY PROOF OR PHOTO THAT THE CAR WAS PARKED NEAR THAT CITY ON THAT DAY. WHY AM I HAVE TO PROVE MY CASE, CAN I ASK THEM TO PROVE THAT I AM GUILTY??

PS,
I can get the valet boy’s name to prove that I am the person driving the car everyday. I say good night to him everyday when I leave. Is that not even enough???
I’m appreciated everyone’s answers. But I don’t understand why I have a thin case like most of you suggested. If like you said, then even the car was registered under my name, then how can she prove that she was driving the car at that time right? It’s based on the common sense right? If you’re the car owner so you must be only one drive the car. However, I have proof that I have insurance and I make payment every month. Is it “rare” that a person’s driving a car under a relative’s name? Besides, I have witness (valet boy). So you guys suggest that as long as you got a ticket then you must commit it?? That doesn’t make sense. You guys are not helping.

Robin West answers:

You have the option of going to court and presenting your facts for the judge to make a decision in your case. However, you have what I’d call thin evidence.

Donna asks…

Do you think that Los Angeles is going to be the next Detroit?

It seems like trying to start a business in California is nearly impossible. Lots of jobs are leaving (ex: A friend of mine’s job went to Denver and he’s moving there in June.) All the taxes they have to pay doesn’t seem to be a help at all neither. It seems like the California government refuses to wise up.

Robin West answers:

Los Angeles has a lot further to drop before it become the chit hole known as Detroit.
